International and Washington State Photography Competitions Washington Salon

72nd Northwest International Exhibition of Photography and Washington State Photography Competitions
These shows ran concurrently at the Washington Salon, Puyallup, WA.  Western Washington Fair hosted these exhibits.  The Fair had well over 1 million visitors in 2012.  I won an Honorable Mention in the International Competition and 2 Honorable Mentions in the Washington State competition.  Of the 8 images I entered, 7 were juried into these competitive shows.  I was very pleasantly shocked at my showing with an over all field of more than 300 photographers and more than 1,000 images, it was amazing that my photos were chosen and won several awards.

A Busy Season

Summer into Fall has been a very busy and rewarding season this year.  After posting about my image in the Burke Museum, I had the wonderful news that all three of my entries in the Maritime Show at the Harbor History Museum had been accepted for exhibit.  While I have been in this show in past years, I have never had all my submissions get in the show.  What a wonderful surprise.

As a curator of "A Celebration of Washington Artists" at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, I was very pleased with the hanging of the show and the enthusiastic response we have had.  Celebration is a collective showing of artists graduating from Artist Trust's EDGE Professional Development program.  Spanning 9 years, we had

"CELEBRATION"
WASHINGTON STATE CONVENTION CENTER
AN ARTIST TRUST EXHIBIT
SHOWCASES 9 YEARS OF ARTIST TRUST EDGE GRADUATES
I was invited to help curate this upcoming Artist Trust exhibit.  Woo Hoo!!!
The Washington State Convention Center in Seattle invited Artist Trust to hang a show in their public gallery space from July 21st through October 21st 2012.  Artist Trust decided to showcase their EDGE program graduates. I am a 2008 EDGE grad myself.
Actually, in 9 years of EDGE there have been over 450 graduates from this wonderful program - but 450 artists to curate is a lot of work!!!!  There are several of us working on this divided up by year.  I am curating years 2006-2008.  Curators and the AT staff person overseeing us are:
MalPina Chan in Olympia,
Dayton Knipher in Tacoma,
Cathy Sarkowsky in Seattle
Natasha Marin also in Seattle,
Exhibit Intern, Lisa Pollman and
Nichole DeMent - Artist Trust Program Manager
This has been so much fun and I love seeing all the art coming through cyberspace.

More on this event as the jury process begins and final art is chosen.

Happy Birthday Today

My birthday has been going very well today.  Just created a new piece,
am enjoying my fun kitties,
my birthday roses from years past are in full bloom,
gotten love and wishes from friends and family, and will pamper myself this afternoon.
Plus the transit of Venus is happening on my birthday - a noteworthy celestial event!
won't see that again for another 150 years
I'm inspired by using my mug "Jesus - the gift of Hope"
Yes, indeed our hope is in Jesus. Amen
Doesn't get any better than that

 2012 International Conservation Photography Awards
Seattle –The Burke Museum will once again exhibit the winners of the International Conservation Photography Awards, a biennial juried competition initiated in 1997 by acclaimed local nature photographer, Art Wolfe.

Over 75 photos were chosen from more than 1500 images submitted by amateur and professional photographers from across the globe. The photographs are conservation-focused, chosen in categories such as Wildlife, Landscape, Underwater, and Community at Risk, which focuses on environmental threats to urban areas. Capturing beautiful moments in the natural world, the photos connect us to the tiniest of creatures and enormous environmental changes. The competition and its award-winning photos inspire, educate, and encourage us all to consider our impacts on the world’s natural resources.
Here are the links to this year's competition.

I participated in the 1st Annual Interactive Community Arts Network (I CAN!) event at Freighthouse Square on Saturday, March 31st. This was a free family-oriented event for the community, by the community, drawing together resources already available within the community.

The goal for producing this event was to help Revitalize Freighthouse Square. In an effort to bring community together at a once-thriving space
I gave a presentation on Demystifying Digital Icons on a digital camera

PLUS I had a solo show in a vendor space turned into the Dayton Knipher Gallery for the month of April

Artist Trust Select Invitation

In February I was invited by Artist Trust of Washington to participate in an innovative new opportunity for artists:

CREATING A LASTING LEGACY (CALL)
Creating a Lasting Legacy (CALL) is an initiative of the Joan Mitchell Foundation (JMF) that provides a range of support to visual artists in organizing, inventorying, archiving and creating a comprehensive documentation of their artworks and careers.  The CALL Overview Workshop lead by JMF consultants is geared towards providing participants with the opportunity to understand the CALL experience for both artists and the trained Legacy Specialists who work with them.

15 Artists throughout the state of Washington were invited to shape the CALL program here in Washington and become CALL Ambassadors through Artist Trust.  I am thrilled to be asked to participate in this valuable initiative and will begin training the first week of March 2012.

Whatcom Museum "Fate of the Forest" - press coverage

Seattle Times - August 20, 2011
Got a great review from Seattle Times arts writer, Michael Upchurch for my piece in "Fate of the Forest" at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, WA (see my post of June 2nd )

"Fate of the Forest" is reviewed in the last two paragraphs of an article re: Elizabeth Colborne - Evergreen Muse.  I was one of only 9 artists out of 200+ in the show who got mentioned.   I'm thrilled!!!!!

My piece,"Crystal Silence," is a response to everything I find dark and mysterious in our precious forests. There is a quiet majesty in the evergreens guarding our soil, air and wilderness. This inspiration led me to create a piece I felt worthy of the trees we take for granted in the Pacific Northwest.

2011 and Tacoma Art Museum - Artist Residency

January and February
Tacoma Art Museum - Artist Residency
On January 1 - I began a 4 month photography residency with the Tacoma Art Museum - Mighty Tacoma Exhibit.  This features a number of Northwest photographers in celebration of Tacoma Art Museum's 75 years in the city of Tacoma. TAM is one of the oldest museums in the state of Washington. I am honored to be the in-residence photographer snapping portraits of folks who come to see the exhibit.
I am especially thrilled that I know most of these photographers and have participated in a number of events with several of them.  Fellow photographer Steve Russell,  had his image chosen to be the signature photo for all publicity as well as a huge banner hanging on the south wall of the building announcing the exhibit.  I am especially tickled that - when he snapped his photo - he told me it reminded him of my art.

Also in January, I continued as the official photograher for Classical Tuesdays and, in February, took photos for Alexandra Picard performing with the Northwest Symphony Orchestra.
